“They don’t care about winning” — David Beckham brutally called out by ‘Angry’ fans for using Lionel Messi to make money
Inter Miami president David Beckham has incurred the wrath of fans after the team was booted out of the CONCACAF Champions Cup.
Inter Miami lost 3-1 against Mexican side Monterrey, with Lionel Messi unable to help his side grind out a result at the Estadio BBVA in Guadalupe on Thursday, April 11.
David Beckham called out after Inter Miami’s elimination from CONCACAF Champions Cup
Following yet another disappointing result for the second most-valuable team in the MLS, fans have taken to social media to react.
One user on X posted a photo from the game after a commentator seemed to troll David Beckham, Inter Miami’s President and minority co-owner, during the defeat.
The photo which showed a dejected Beckham and Jorge Mas watching the game from the stands was captioned, “Match Commentator to David Beckham:
"You brought Messi, but you didn't bring a team with him. He's alone on the team. Messi alone won't do everything for you.”
This sentiment seemed to be echoed by other fans on social media as one user also wrote on Instagram:
“Never learn a lesson lol, Noah Allen again this club is a** , such a marketing club only use it for profit and they don't even care about winning, trust me ain't no way this club gonna win a league, not even a small cup even after won a league cup's.”
Another user on X buttressed and tore into the former England international and his fellow club executive.
The user wrote: “ All facts. Fraud Beckham and Jorge Mas are just using Messi’s name to market this club everywhere
-over stacked pre friendly
- injuries
- trash signings
lol. I’m so done man. This dude really wasting his last years at this club.”
Beckham under scrutiny over Inter Miami’s struggles with Messi
Recall that Beckham, one of the richest footballers in the world, signed Lionel Messi in the summer of 2023, having bought Inter Miami for $25 million.
Under his leadership, the MLS club’s value has been significantly raised to over $1 billion in 2024.
However, the 48-year-old Englishman has come under scrutiny for seemingly prioritizing marketing and sponsorships over on-field success.
Beckham has often been called out for failing to give Messi the much-needed support to make the club as competitive as ever in continental competitions.
Inter Miami picked up the first trophy of the club’s history last year, after Messi led the team to the Leagues Cup triumph.
Following that success, the club made another high profile signing in 2024 with the signing of former Barcelona and Liverpool striker Luis Suarez, in addition to Messi’s ex-teammates Jordi Alba and Sergio Busquets who joined the club on a free transfer last season.
What next for Inter Miami?
Inter Miami currently sit third in the MLS Eastern conference having picked up 12 points from 8 matches.
Messi and his team return to action on Sunday, April 14, when they face Sporting Kansas City in the MLS.
