‘The road will be clear’ - Ex-Super Eagles star believes Nigeria will clinch World Cup ticket
The Super Eagles of Nigeria secured a decisive 4-0 victory over Benin Republic on Tuesday in their final World Cup qualifiers.
While the win wasn't enough for automatic qualification, it secured Nigeria's place in the CAF play-offs as one of the four best group runners-up.
This gives the team a crucial second opportunity to earn a ticket to the tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
Iroha backs Super Eagles for World Cup ticket
Speaking to Complete Sports, Iroha praised the team's recent performance. "I’ll say congratulations to Nigerians for the win and particularly to the team for fighting hard to win the game convincingly," he said.
"That was a fantastic performance by the Super Eagles. The boys really came out for it as though their lives depended on it, and I’m happy they got the result."
"If they replicate this form and performance in the playoffs next month in Morocco, I’m sure the road will be clear for our World Cup qualification," he stated.
"You may say they left it late, but it’s better late than never. You appreciate success more when you work hard and earn it the tough way."
He expressed optimism about the current squad, adding, "We have a group of young and talented players who, I believe, are getting better with every game.
“The Morocco playoffs are around the corner. I can only advise that they keep working hard and build on this momentum to complete the job they’ve just started."
The Super Eagles are now set to face Gabon in a single-leg semi-final on November 13 in Morocco. A victory would pit them against the winner of the Cameroon vs DR Congo match for Africa's final inter-confederation play-off berth.
