Super Falcons guaranteed ₦13 million each for participating in FIFA World Cup

Nigeria’s Super Falcons are set for a huge payday at the 2023 Women’s World Cup after FIFA announced that they will be tripling the prize money for the event. 

In a bid to close the gap between the women’s and men’s competitions, FIFA announced that there would be a wide range of changes to the prizes handed out at the upcoming FIFA World Cup in New Zealand and Australia. 

FIFA announced the total prize money expected to be paid to players at the end of the World Co be £88.5 million which is more than three times the £24 million paid out in total for the 2019 edition, a sign of the growth in the game in the four years between both. 

FIFA also announced the breakdown of compensation that will be going to Federations and clubs whose players featured in the tournament. 

World football’s governing body also stated that teams will given prize money based on final positions, with each team guaranteed to earn at least £1.81m from being at the World Cup. 

Of the total prize money guaranteed, players are guaranteed £550,000 to be shared amongst them as prize money, meaning each player in a squad will take home at least £24,000 for participating at the World Cup. 

This is the least any player will receive, but prize money goes up in the latter rounds of the competition, as teams are rewarded for progressing through stages. 

The winning team will earn a total of £8.5m, with £4.99m of that going to the players, leaing each member of a potential World Cup winning side with at least £217,000. 

Needless to say, it is the highest payout at the World Cup, and indeed at any major women’s international competition, as FIFA aim to make the women’s game more lucrative for investors, football associations, and the players themselves.
