Super Eagles now scoring for fun — NFF president explains why Chelle must continue
Chelle, who took over in January 2025, led Nigeria to a third-place finish at the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
Notably, the Super Eagles remained unbeaten in regulation time throughout the entire tournament.
Reviewing the team’s progress, Gusau highlighted their record-breaking goal tally and defensive discipline as clear evidence that the team is on the right track
NFF desperate to continue with Eric Chelle for Super Eagles
"After the conclusion of AFCON, despite the fact that we did not win the trophy, we basically happened to be the highest goal-scoring team in the tournament," Gusau said. "As well as the only team that did not lose a match apart from those penalty kicks. That shows that there is improvement in the team."
The Super Eagles finished as the competition’s top scorers with 14 goals, eight in the group stage and six in the knockout rounds. Defensively, they were just as impressive, keeping clean sheets throughout the knockout phase and finishing among the tournament's best defences.
Gusau also credited the Federal Government and the National Sports Commission for providing the stability needed for such a run.
"We must commend the government for its support because that is the beauty of working together," he added.
"Once you are able to collaborate and face a common goal, you will definitely achieve it. This is just the beginning."
While friendly matches intended to test more young players in November were moved due to playoff commitments, Gusau assured fans that the "youth revolution" will continue in the upcoming international windows.
"The most important thing is the discovery of some new young talents. If not for the playoffs, we intended to allow the coach to try some new young players in November. We still have the March window, Nigerians should expect more."
