With the Gunners defeating Aston Villa 4-1 on Wednesday night, Pep Guardiola’s men needed to respond.

However, Sunderland stopped them from extending their winning streak by holding them to a 0-0 draw.

As it happened

Sunderland made just one alteration from the 1-1 draw against Leeds United last time out. Eliezer Mayenda came into the side in place of Chris Rigg, who dropped to the bench.

Manchester City made two changes following their hard-fought 2-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Saturday. There was a surprise in defence, with Nathan Ake replacing Josko Gvardiol.

Early in the first half, City had the ball in the net, but it was later ruled out for an offside after VAR intervention.

The Black Cats probed the Citizens' defence with several clear chances but missed them all, heading into the break at 0-0.

In the second half, both teams created loads of chances to get the first goal but could not get the ball into the net.

Man City piled on more pressure late in the game, but the Black Cats held their ground until the final whistle.
