It was at the 2023 US Championships, as Sha’Carri Richardson prepared for the 100m final. After stepping onto the track in her signature orange wig, she dramatically removed it to reveal her braided hair before storming to a decisive victory.

This powerful gesture of self-trust and reinvention struck a chord with Serena Williams, who is herself celebrated for her unapologetic authenticity on and off the court.

Sha’Carri Richardson: A Dialogue of Honesty and Shared Experience

In a recent discussion posted on Serena Williams' X (Twitter) profile, Sha’Carri Richardson opened up about the emotional challenges that come with being a top-tier global athlete.

The 2023 world 100m champion avoided presenting her path as a simple success story, instead highlighting the complexities of staying grounded while living under a microscope.

"The mental health journey is an ongoing journey," Sha’Carri Richardson explained. "It's never a finish line, ironically, me saying that. There's never a finish line... when it comes to that journey."

The Olympic 100m silver medallist emphasised the need for self-awareness, especially for public figures whose lives are constantly observed.

"We have to be very mindful of just what state of mind that we're in when it comes to first ourselves, and as you said, a directed environment, but then also... the world," she continued.

"I do feel like my mental health journey has been a journey for me that I am, like, strangely figuring out as life is going on.

“Like, I'm learning that life is a forever battle. I mean, not battle, but forever, like, kind of roller coaster, but it's still the best ride to be on. I think that's kind of where I'm at right now. That makes sense. It's like I'm on a roller coaster, but I'm enjoying this ride."

The 2025 season presented a difficult series of challenges for Sha'Carri Richardson, starting with an early setback. She revealed that an injury suffered in February completely derailed her training, significantly impacting her start to the season and her ability to execute her races effectively.

The turbulence continued just before the USATF Championships in late July when she was arrested at the Seattle-Tacoma International Airport following a highly publicised domestic dispute with her boyfriend, Christian Coleman.

Days after the incident, Sha’Carri Richardson issued a public apology to Coleman, expressing that her actions stemmed from past trauma and pain.

Heading into the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo as the defending 100m champion, Sha’Carri Richardson was granted a wildcard entry but was not considered a favourite.

In the 100m final, she was unable to repeat her previous success, finishing in fifth place with a time of 10.94 seconds, failing to defend her title, which was won by her training partner, Melissa Jefferson-Wooden.

Despite the individual disappointment, Sha’Carri Richardson did find a measure of redemption, anchoring the US women's team to gold in the 4x100m relay on the final day of the championships.
