Manchester City legend Sergio "Kun" Agüero has successfully undergone surgery after suffering a devastating left Achilles tendon tear while playing in a veterans' match in Argentina.
Aguero’s injury
The 37-year-old sustained a "heavy blow" to his ankle and had to be carried off the pitch by both teammates and opponents during a clash between his boyhood club, Independiente, and rival River Plate in Argentina’s +35 Senior League Cup.
The game continued after he was carried off, and despite losing their star forward, Independiente ultimately secured a 2-0 victory in the over-35s tournament.

Following an immediate MRI scan that confirmed the severe rupture, Agüero wasted no time going under the knife, subsequently sharing a reassuring, smiling photograph from his hospital bed to confirm the procedure was a success.
Independiente’s senior team also confirmed the procedure was a success, sharing, "Sergio 'Kun' Agüero has successfully undergone surgery for his ruptured Achilles tendon. Get well soon, @kunaguero.' We're waiting for you" on social media.

Another Aguero career cut short
This devastating injury indefinitely halts Agüero’s post-retirement senior career, a passion project he had joyfully embraced after a life-threatening medical scare forced him to hang up his boots prematurely in 2021.
At the age of 33, the legendary striker, who famously won five Premier League titles with Manchester City and the 2021 Copa América with Argentina, experienced severe chest discomfort during just his fifth professional appearance for Barcelona, which was formally diagnosed as cardiac arrhythmia and ultimately led to his retirement.
Participating in the +35 Senior League Cup had allowed Agüero to finally fulfil his long-standing dream of returning to play for Independiente, the club he originally left at age 18.
Unfortunately, the gruelling recovery timeline for a ruptured Achilles typically spans a year or more, raising serious doubts over whetherr he will ever be physically able to return to the pitch again, even in a veteran capacity.
