Senegal declares National Holiday to Celebrate AFCON Victory
Senegalese President Bassirou Diomaye Faye has declared Monday, January 19, 2026, a nationwide public holiday to celebrate the country’s triumph at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
The announcement follows Senegal’s dramatic 1–0 victory over host nation Morocco in the tournament final, played at the Stade Prince Moulay Abdellah in Rabat.

The Lions of Teranga clinched the title after an intense and closely contested final, with midfielder Pape Gueye scoring the decisive goal in extra time to break Moroccan resistance and secure victory for the West African champions.
The win marked Senegal’s second AFCON title, adding to their maiden triumph in 2021. It also means the Lions of Teranga have now won two of the last three Africa Cup of Nations tournaments.
President Faye declared public holiday
President Faye described the achievement as a “historic triumph for national pride”, praising the players and technical staff for their discipline, unity, and determination throughout the competition.
In his statement, President Faye said the public holiday would allow Senegalese citizens across the country and in the diaspora to fully participate in celebrations and show appreciation for the national team’s achievement.
“The nation salutes its heroes,” the president said, emphasising that the victory belongs to all Senegalese people.
