AFC Leopards made another emphatic statement in the FKF Premier League title race when Samuel Ssenyonjo scored a hat-trick as they thrashed Tusker FC 4-0 to open up a three-point lead at the top of the table.

Ingwe, who had come into the match on the back of a 2-0 win over Nairobi United and 1-0 loss to Kakamega Homeboyz, made it four wins in their last five matches, and in some style.

Leopards took just 13 minutes to break the deadlock when Ssenyonjo started his act of scoring. Tyson Otieno won the ball in midfield and found James Kinyanjui on the right wing who quickly passed to the Ugandan and the striker made no mistakes.

It took Ssenyonjo 10 minutes to make it 2-0 as he linked up with Kinyanjui again for the second. The winger delivered to the striker who went past his marker and goalkeeper to slot home as Leopards held firm for a 2-0 lead at halftime.

Two minutes upon resumption, Ssenyonjo turned provider with his lovely backheeled pass finding Ronald Sichenje who extended Ingwe’s lead with the third goal.

The Ugandan forward, who signed for Leopards last September, would complete his memorable day with his hat-trick in the 71st minute after coolly converting a penalty.

Where Does the Win Leave Leopards?

It was a massive statement of intent from Leopards who have been showing some consistency in their recent matches and the big win sees them move top of the 18-team table with 30 points from 16 matches, three more than Gor Mahia, who played out a goalless draw with Shabana earlier on Sunday.

Gor Mahia, however, have two games in hand but Leopards’ form is now putting pressure on them as they cannot afford many slipups.

While the season is just at its halfway mark, Fred Ambani and his charges are giving success-starved Leopards supporters hope that a first league title in 28 years could arrive at the Den.
