Ryan Ogam on How He Plans to Make Most of Wolfsberger Opportunity Amid Big 5 League Move Opportunity

Harambee Stars striker Ryan Ogam is ready for the challenge of the Austrian Bundesliga after completing his move to Wolfsberger AC from Tusker following his 2024 African Nations Championships (CHAN) heroics.

Ogam has had a year to remember. He scored 15 goals in just 17 league games for Tusker after being converted from a midfielder to striker by Charles Okere, before shaking off injury to shine for Kenya during the tournament, which the country co-hosted alongside Uganda and Tanzania.

He adjusted to the main team like a duck to water this September, scoring three goals in his first two official caps for the nation, and now is on his way to Austria to officially sign for the European side.

Speaking to the media from the Kasarani Stadium after netting two goals in a 5-0 rout of Seychelles, Ogam explained why he has not choice but to quickly adapt to a new environment if he is to fulfil his dream of succeeding abroad.

“Austria will be a challenge, but everything is a challenge in general. Nothing is difficult,” Ogam said. “I will just have to adjust quickly to the weather and everything else, and I believe everything else will be able to take care of itself.”

The CHAN tournament has often seen several players earn lucrative moves abroad if they impressed enough. Mali’s Yvess Bisouma shone at the 2016 edition, and it earned him a move to Lille, before he eventually ended up joining Brighton and then Tottenham. 

Other African tournaments such as the U20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), gave Patson Daka and Enock Mwepu a chance to attract the eye of Austrian scouts, and in the end, they used the Austrian platform to eventually move to the Premier League.

Ogam is hoping the move could be a springboard, but he is certainly not getting ahead of himself yet.“It is a big team. My focus is to get there and know how things are. Once I settle down there, then I will be able to think about how I can help the team with my scoring and more qualities and I am sure from there, the stars will be able to align.”

As Ogam prepares to join Wolfsberger, one of the biggest sides in Austrian football, he hopes it will give him the platform to continue elevating his game and perhaps, even earn a move to a bigger side afterwards.

“Wolfsberger is a good team and a big one, and I am focused on it. It is a good club and I will give my best like I did for Tusker and for the national team."
