In a recent revelation on the I AM ATHLETE podcast, Denver Broncos quarterback Russell Wilson, opened up about a profound conversation he had with God regarding his decision to embrace the role of stepfatherhood to Ciara's son, Future Zahir - named after his father and American rapper Future.
Wilson,35, likened his journey to that of Joseph, stepfather to Jesus, emphasizing the divine nature of his calling.
Russell Wilson opens up on Divine Guidance and Step-fatherhood
In the intimate setting of the I AM ATHLETE podcast, Wilson candidly shared the pivotal moment when he felt the divine hand guiding him towards his responsibility as a stepfather.
Reflecting on the day he first met little Future, Wilson recounted the profound experience, stating, "When I walked in the room and I saw, you know, little Future - he's nine months at the time or whatever - he crawls in my lap and it was like, you know, this is going to be my responsibility."
The quarterback's also described a conversation he had with God, seeking clarity on his newfound role after meeting Ciara.
"I remember leaving that night and God said, saying to me, 'Raising this child it's going to be your responsibility.' I prayed to God, asking 'Are you sure this is what you want me to do?' He said, 'Son, this is for you.'"
Drawing parallels to the biblical narrative of Joseph, Wilson embraced his role as a stepfather with humility and reverence.
He reflected on Joseph's journey, highlighting the profound love and dedication required to nurture a child who was not biologically his own.
"Even Jesus himself, like Joseph, he was a stepdad. I was like, 'Okay.' He wasn't biologically his. So okay God, you're going to give me this opportunity to love the way that you were loved, the love that you want us to love."
Wilson’s commitment to providing love, support, and guidance to Future’s son underscores the essence of fatherhood, regardless of genetic lineage.
In the years since embracing his role as a stepfather, Wilson and Ciara have expanded their family, welcoming three more children - Sienna Princess (born in 2017), Win Harrison (born in 2020), and Amora Princess (born in December 2023).
Despite his professional achievements, including a lucrative five-year extension with the Broncos, Wilson's most profound journey remains rooted in his role as a devoted husband and father.
In 2022, after his trade from the Seahawks, Wilson penned a lucrative five-year contract extension worth $242 million with the Broncos.
However, there are reports that his tenure in Denver could be coming to a close, as the team failed to make the playoffs for the second consecutive season, casting uncertainty over Wilson's future with the franchise.
