Revealed: Why Enyimba received over N1bn alert from CAF
Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, club Enyimba may have suffered an early exit from the inaugural African Football League (AFL) season, but their participation has proven extremely lucrative financially.
Pulse Sports Nigeria reports that the People’s Elephant were one of eight giants in African football who took part in the maiden edition of the CAF and FIFA tournament for African clubs.
Enyimba get CAF largesse
The eight-time Nigerian champions were eliminated 4-0 on aggregate by Moroccan giants Wydad Casablanca in the first round of the competition, which was originally a 24-team pan-African tournament.
However, Enyimba laughed all the way to the bank after receiving a whopping $750,000 simply for competing in the fledgling AFL.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF), creators of the $ 4 million AFL, awarded all participating clubs generous prize funds as a reward for helping elevate the continent's club football to new heights.
The funds, CAF expects, will used to reinvest into the club(s) by developing new facilities and infrastructure at Enyimba's home to inspire the next generation of stars.
While unable to match the quality of two-time African champions Wydad on the pitch, off the field this money-spinning AFL run should aid Enyimba's future development immensely.
