Reports suggest his wife, Maria Joao Diogo, is struggling to adjust to life in England, sparking rumors that the Portuguese coach could cut his stay short.
Amorim's wife reportedly unhappy in Manchester
Maria Joao Diogo, an accomplished interior designer and businesswoman, followed her husband to England after his appointment as United’s head coach in November.
However, life in the north-west of England has reportedly not been to her liking. According to The Sun, murmurs have been circulating at United’s training ground that Maria has found it difficult to settle due to the city's notoriously gloomy weather, strong winds, and early nightfall.
She wouldn’t be the first partner of a high-profile football figure to express dissatisfaction with life in Manchester.
The notorious case of Angel Di Maria's wife, Jorgelina Cardoso, serves as a warning to Amorim. The Argentine winger lasted just 11 months at Manchester United after moving from Real Madrid in 2014.
Cardoso later described their time in Manchester as a nightmare, saying, "I didn’t like it at all... People are all weird. You walk around and don’t know if they’re going to kill you. The food is disgusting. The women look like porcelain.”
Turbulent times at Old Trafford for Amorim
While Maria’s alleged struggles have not been as publicly detailed, comparisons to past cases like Di Maria’s have fuelled speculation that Amorim might consider leaving United sooner than expected.
Even without personal distractions, Amorim’s time in Manchester has been far from smooth. The 40-year-old has lost eight of his first 16 Premier League matches since replacing Erik ten Hag, and Manchester United were recently dumped out of the FA Cup by Fulham.
With just one win in their last five league games, the club is on course to record its worst-ever finish in the Premier League era.
The Europa League remains United’s only shot at salvaging their season, but with performances faltering, questions are mounting over Amorim’s long-term future.
While he has publicly committed to fighting on, the reported difficulties his family is facing could make his position even more precarious.
