Valverde, who was captain for the day, scored in the 20th, 27th, and 42nd minutes to hand Real Madrid a huge advantage going into the second leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Real Madrid vs Man City: How it happened

Although City began slightly brighter, they failed to convert early pressure as Jérémy Doku’s dangerous deliveries lacked a finishing touch.

Real struck first when Thibaut Courtois launched a long ball to Federico Valverde, who surged in from the right, beat Nico O’Reilly and goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma, and slotted into the empty net.

In the absence of regular talisman Kylian Mbappe, Valverde continued his outstanding performance just before the half-hour mark. Vinícius Júnior drove forward from the left and played a clever reverse pass that sent the Uruguayan through on goal, allowing him to fire a precise shot into the bottom corner.

Real’s captain completed a sensational hat-trick later in the half, expertly flicking Brahim Díaz’s chipped pass over Marc Guéhi before tapping past Donnarumma.

After the break, Real Madrid had a chance to add to their tally when Vinícius was fouled by Donnarumma during a breakaway, but the goalkeeper redeemed himself by saving the Brazilian’s penalty. Real continued to threaten, while Courtois produced a superb reflex save to deny City.

Despite a brief late push, City failed to score for the first time since mid-January, leaving them facing a difficult task in the return leg.
