Real Madrid vs Levante: Los Blancos put Copa del Rey exit behind, return to winning ways after 2 cup defeats
Earlier this week, Xabi Alonso left his role as Real Madrid manager and was swiftly replaced by former Liverpool teammate Alvaro Arbeloa.
Alonso had left by "mutual consent" just a few days after they were defeated by Barcelona in the Super Cup final. The appointment of the club legend did not change anything, as Arbeloa saw his team eliminated by Albacete in the Copa del Rey.
However, they did well to get their feet back on track in the league with a 2-0 victory over Levante, with a chance of catching up with Barcelona.
As it happened
Real Madrid's new manager, Arbeloa, selected a strong XI for the game against Levante after being shockingly eliminated from the Copa del Rey.
The first half ended in a stalemate, as both teams failed to create any meaningful chances, with Madrid managing only one shot on target.
In the second half, Madrid took the lead from the penalty spot after Kylian Mbappe was lunged at in the box by Adrian de la Fuente. He stepped up coolly and slotted the ball past the goalkeeper.
Raul Asencio then doubled the lead in the 65th minute after jumping the highest to head home from Arda Guler's cross.
Arbeloa’s team were looking confident for the remainder of the games, dictating the tempo until the final whistle was blown.
Following the win, Arbeloa got his team back to winning ways claiming his first victory as the new Real Madrid manager.
