Premier League side set to double Chelsea's bid for Barcelona star
Premier League-promoted side Sunderland are reportedly preparing a bid for Barcelona midfielder Fermin Lopez, as they are keen on making a serious push in the division this season.
The 22-year-old midfielder had been on a steady rise since making his debut in the 2023/24 season. He was on Chelsea's radar last summer, and the Blues even submitted a bid, which was immediately rejected.
Sunderland’s interest
According to Fichajes, the Black Cats are interested in Fermin and are preparing a seismic bid worth €80 million to tempt Barcelona.
As Pulse Sports reported, Chelsea submitted a bid of €40 million to Barcelona in the summer; however, the Blaugrana snubbed the offer.
The statement from the club's sporting director, Deco, was that they were uninterested in selling Fermin as Hansi Flick valued the player. However, it was also understood that Chelsea's bid was deemed too small.
Fermin's profile and status have risen since the summer, and he is now the first-choice attacking midfielder, leapfrogging Dani Olmo. He has 10 goal contributions this season already.
Sunderland seemingly understand they have to tempt Barcelona with a serious bid; hence the rumoured €80 million proposal.
The Tyne and Wear-based club were promoted to the Premier League this season, and they splashed the cash in the summer to declare intent. They spent a reported £155 million in the summer, and the impact is visible, as they currently lie 4th on the Premier League table after eleven matches.
They want to make a serious push for European football this season, and the move for Fermin Lopez is in service of that strategy..
