Orlando Pirates Legend Issues Ultimatum As Mokwena And McCarthy Lead Succession Race
As the search for Jose Riveiro’s successor heats up at Orlando Pirates, ex-goalkeeper Moeneeb Josephs has delivered a powerful message to the club’s hierarchy.
With former Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena and the Kenyan national football team, Harambee Stars head coach Benni McCarthy leading the speculation trail, Josephs insists the next appointment must be a “serial winner” capable of delivering silverware immediately.

Orlando Pirates Legend Demands Immediate Success
Speaking candidly in a recent interview with Soccer Beat on YouTube, Josephs, a former Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper, expressed frustration with the club’s recent managerial approach.
“The foundation has been laid for the next coach to come in and go and win us this league, not to go and rebuild,” Josephs asserted.
“The players that we got, we have enough quality there in our squad to go and win this league. We just need the right leader to go and take us there.”
Josephs emphasized that Orlando Pirates, one of South Africa’s most storied football clubs, can no longer afford patience or long-term experiments.
“We’ve been speaking too long about every coach that comes in wanting to rebuild. That is important, yes but now we need someone who is all about winning. You’re building nothing. This team has been built for you to take to the next level.”
Mokwena, McCarthy Dominate Speculation
The coaching vacancy was created following Jose Riveiro’s departure to Egyptian giants Al Ahly, ending his eventful tenure with the Buccaneers.
Now, the race is intensifying, with Rulani Mokwena, recently released by Wydad Casablanca, emerging as a top contender.
Mokwena, known for his tactical brilliance and previous tenure at Pirates as co-coach, is being widely tipped for a return.
Meanwhile, Benni McCarthy, despite being under contract with the Kenyan national team, continues to be linked to the Soweto giants.
The former Manchester United first team coaand Bafana Bafana legend has never hidden his admiration for the Pirates and remains a fan favorite.
Josephs, however, insists that whoever steps in must understand the magnitude of the role.
“Orlando Pirates deserves that. We’re tired of hanging around and hearing, ‘We need time.’ No. It’s time now that we start dominating,” he declared.
