St Mirren were the unlikely heroes of the cup final at Hampden Park on Sunday as they added onto Celtic’s miserable season and had a dream start when Marcus Fraser headed in from a Keanu Baccus corner after just 96 seconds.

Celtic would pull one back when Reo Hatate volleyed home from a Kieran Tierney pass after 23 minutes before the Ayunga act began.

In the 64th minute, Ayunga got St Mirren ahead with a well-taken goal from Alex Gogic’s cross before adding gloss on the score line with his second of the day and his team’s third after slotting home from Declan John’s pass.

It was a complete performance that earned Ayunga and his team plaudits while they fully deserved to win the trophy against a below-par Celtic, whose struggles continue, even after the arrival of new coach Wilfried Nancy.

"Amazing. We met the fans at the calendar signing this week and this was all they spoke about,” an ecstatic Ayunga told the BBC after the game. “To get the chance to play in this, let alone win it and score, I couldn't imagine it any better. Not a bad day's work, eh?”

"This is once in a lifetime. I've been playing since I was 17, I'm nearly 30, this was the first time I had a chance to win anything. The manager deserves it. You see what he's done year upon year at St Mirren. This is the icing on the cake,” added the striker, who has been at St Mirren since 2022.

The performance maintains Ayunga’s great run in front of goal as he has now scored three goals in his last three games for the club.
