Oluwaseun Ogunsakin becomes first Nigerian to earn wildcard into Wimbledon Junior event
Africa’s top-ranked U-14 player, Oluwaseun Ogunsakin, has made history as he becomes the first Nigerian homegrown tennis player to participate at Wimbledon.
Wimbledon is the oldest tennis tournament and is regarded as the most prestigious in the world. It started in 1877 and was held at the All-England Club in Wimbledon, London.
The 2023 edition is scheduled from July 3 to July 16 in London.
Ogunsakin qualified for a wild card to play at the Junior Grand Slam in Wimbledon, and he will embark on a European Tour before the commencement of the tournament.
He was awarded a spot after he emerged as the African U-14 champion at the International Tennis Federation Confederation of African Tennis, (ITF/CAT) junior championships held in Lome.
The youngster from Nigeria has promised to give it his all and return home with the trophy because this is the first time a junior player from his country has advanced to the junior grand slam's main event.
Ogunsakin will shortly leave his training camp in Tunisia to compete in a few events in Europe.
