Okereke’s strike not enough as Mourinho defeats Gaziantep, closing the point gap on Osimhen’s Galatasaray
Heading into the game, Jose Mourinho’s team were six points behind Galatasaray after the league leaders failed to win their game against Eyupspor.
However, they were able to find their way back in the title race after defeating Gaziantep 3-1 on the night.
As it happened
Super Eagles star Bright Osayi Samuel made the starting lineup for Jose Mourinho’s side following the 2-1 win against Slavia Praha in the Europa League, while Nigerian-eligible David Okereke started on the wing for Gaziantep
Fenerbahce made a quick start to the game and did not take them up to three minutes before they opened the scoring.
Youssef En Nesyri played a fantastic through ball and found Oguz Aydin who reacted quickly to get in front of the goalkeeper and fired a close-range shot into the bottom left corner.
Just a few minutes before halftime, the visitors shocked the host, scoring the equaliser to level the game.
A superb cross found David Okereke unmarked in the penalty box and he poached the ball into the middle past the goalkeeper to level the scoreline.
Fenerbahce found it had to break down the visitors, not until the 78th minute when Dusan Tadic played in a corner and it was met by Rodrigo Becao into the back of the net.
The third goal then killed the visitor's hope of an equaliser when Edin Dzeko scored with a brilliant shot into the top right corner after being released inside the box by a superb lofted pass from Fred.
The home side held their ground and denied the visitors any chance to get back into the game until the final whistle was blown.
