Nigeria will face a stern test in their quest for promotion after being drawn against Morocco in the Davis Cup World Group I playoff scheduled for September 18–20, 2026.
The North African side, currently ranked 48th in the world, is Africa’s second-highest-ranked tennis nation behind Egypt and represents one of the continent’s strongest Davis Cup teams.
The tie presents a major challenge for Nigeria, which is still seeking its first-ever victory over Morocco in the competition.
Their rivalry dates back to 1973, and Morocco has historically held the upper hand in previous meetings.
Morocco entered the playoff after a 3-1 defeat to Colombia in the last World Group I stage, a result that dropped them into the current round. Nigeria, on the other hand, secured their place with an impressive win over Uzbekistan in a Group II tie.
ITF confirms Nigeria to face Morocco
The International Tennis Federation (ITF) has confirmed the match window but has yet to announce the host nation and venue.
With a place in World Group I at stake, the clash is expected to be fiercely contested. For Nigeria, it offers not only an opportunity to advance in the prestigious tournament but also a chance to end a decades-long winless streak against one of Africa’s tennis powerhouses.
