The 33rd edition of the African Weightlifting Championship is scheduled to take place from May 11 to May 20, 2023.

Nigeria is among the 21 countries that will take part in the championship that will also serve as qualifiers for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

African Weightlifting Championship holds in Tunisia

Nothing less than 180 athletes are expected to take part in the championship that will take place at Hammadi Ben Ammar Hall in La Goulette, Tunisia.

The only nation outside of the continent to participate in the competition is Azerbaijan, which was sent an invitation by the organizer.

The list of participating countries includes the host country, Tunisia, Nigeria, Algeria, Egypt, Morocco, Libya, Mauritania, Sudan, Uganda, and Mauritius.

Others are; South Africa, Sierra Leone, Seychelles, Zambia, Cameroon, Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, DR Congo, Ghana, ,Madagascar, and Azerbaijan.

Why Azerbaijan will participate at African Weightlifting Championship

The Azerbaijan nationwide weightlifting staff will participate in the African Championship, the Azerbaijan Weightlifting Federation confirmed.

Azerbaijani staff members Nazil Ismailova (45 kg), Isa Rustamov (67 kg) and Omar Javadov (73 kg) will participate in Tunisia.

The African Championship is a substitute for missing out on the European Championship held in Yerevan due to the provocation of the Armenians.
