Barcelona's pursuit of Nico Williams hit a roadblock despite being favorites to sign the Spanish winger, the La Liga champions couldn't secure his transfer.

Williams ultimately chose to stay at Athletic Club, his boyhood club. The main reason for this failed transfer was Barcelona's inability to guarantee Williams' registration due to financial constraints, specifically fitting him into their salary cap.

This situation was further complicated by the need to also register other new signings, such as Dani Olmo.

What Williams said

Williams delivered an emotional message via ESPN after signing the contract.

He said, “I think we have a very long season ahead of us. We have very ambitious titles like the Champions League, which everyone would like to play in. What could be better than doing it with the club of my life? I would like to continue making history here at San Mames, with the fans, with my family, and with a lot of enthusiasm."

“We've both always dreamed of this moment. My brother is a role model for everyone, especially for me. I think he's the best person to be captain, and I can't wait to see him wearing the armband for a long time,” he added.

At just 22 years old, the Spain international has quickly become a fan favourite, notable for both his pace and connection to the Basque community.
