Milan must fight to win trophies - Modric drops new objective for Chukwueze and others
Veteran Croatian midfielder Luka Modric has sent a clear message to AC Milan’s players, including Nigerian winger Samuel Chukwueze, urging them to aim higher than just Champions League qualification as he begins a new chapter in his illustrious career at the San Siro.
The 39-year-old, who spent the last 13 years at Real Madrid winning five Champions League titles and a Ballon d’Or, was officially unveiled by Milan this week after completing his move to the Italian giants.
What Modric said
Modric revealed a long-held affection for the Rossoneri, inspired by Croatian legend Zvonimir Boban, and the dream of wearing the famous red and black jersey.
He said, “I grew up watching Italian football and Milan was my favourite team, especially because of my idol Boban. I always had a particular affection for the club.
“We mustn’t be content with just qualifying for the Champions League. That is the minimum. Milan must fight to win trophies. That is my goal, and it should be the goal for everyone at this club.”
Milan lifted the Supercoppa Italiana last season but fell short in Serie A and lost the Coppa Italia Final to Bologna. With no European football this term, Modric believes it’s a perfect opportunity for coach Max Allegri to build a strong, focused team.
Modric’s arrival is also expected to inspire younger players like Chukwueze, who is entering his second season at Milan and is seen as a key figure in the club’s attacking plans.
“I am very competitive and I want to bring that mentality to the team. We must be humble but also work very hard to return Milan to the top.”
Modric, who has signed a one-year deal with an option to extend until 2027, said conversations with Boban, Carlo Ancelotti, and Zlatan Ibrahimović had only strengthened his admiration for Milan.
