Former Super Eagles midfielder Sunday Oliseh appeared to have said that the late Rashidi Yekini had strong opinions on the GOAT debate between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo.

The age-old debate has become a staple in interviews involving current and past football players. However, for Yekini, who passed in 2012, there are no clips to determine what side of the debate he falls on.

Anecdotal evidence would have to do, however, as his former teammate, Sunday Oliseh, might have confirmed that the Super Eagles' all-time top scorer was a big Messi fan and held the opinion that the diminutive Argentine was the greatest footballer of all time.

What Oliseh said

The former Dortmund midfielder was recently on the Home Turf podcast, where he discussed the struggles of the current crop of Super Eagles players in the World Cup qualifiers.

Oliseh argued that the players used social media too much, citing Lionel Messi as an example of how to avoid such frivolities in camp. He said he used Messi as an example because he held the Argentine in high regard before introducing that his friend “Rashidi” had him as his GOAT.

“Messi is currently the World Cup champion, captain of Argentina, and one of the greatest footballers; some believe, Rashidi, my friend, believes he is the greatest footballer ever,” Oliseh said.

Oliseh has spoken very fondly of Yekini since his sad passing and has been one of the most vocal about keeping his memory alive. While he did not say “Rashidi Yekini,” the Rashidi he referred to as his friend is most probably the Goalsfather.

However, there is an off chance the former Ajax midfielder referenced someone else. Hence, Pulse Sports has reached out to him for clarification.

Meanwhile, at the time Yekini died in May 2012, Messi had already won the Ballon d'Or for three consecutive years, with the fourth one on the way. Also, he was already being associated with the GOAT label by the likes of Arsène Wenger as early as 2011, when he was 23.
