Argentine football legend Lionel Messi etched his name into MLS history during Inter Miami's commanding 6-2 victory over the New York Red Bulls, becoming the first player to record five assists in a single game and contribute to six goals in a match.
After contributing directly to an astonishing six-goal spree in just 36 minutes of the second half, the Inter Miami's forward displayed a masterclass performance against the New York Red Bulls, reminiscent of his prime years.
Messi puts New York Red Bulls to the sword
Messi initiated the scoring in the 50th minute, and Matias Rojas, a recent addition to Inter Miami, found the net in the 48th and 62nd minutes, with both goals assisted by the Argentine maestro.
Former Barcelona star Luis Suarez also secured a second-half hat-trick for Inter Miami, with Messi playing a pivotal role in all three goals as well.
Messi enters MLS history books
With five assists in the game against New York Red Bulls, Messi wrote his name into the MLS history books, becoming the first player to provide that many goals for his teammates in one match.
The Argentine World Cup winner also became the first player in the league’s history to be involved in as many as six goals in one match with one goal an five assists.
In just eight regular-season games in 2024, Messi leads MLS with 10 goals and 12 assists.
