Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé has expressed his delight after winning his first-ever European Golden Boot, but insists he is not focused on trying to surpass Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary records at the Spanish club.
The French superstar claimed the prestigious award following an incredible 31 goals in 34 La Liga games during the 2024/25 season, finishing as Europe’s top scorer when league difficulty was factored in.
What Mbappe said
Speaking to MARCA after receiving the award, Mbappé was quick to dismiss comparisons with Ronaldo, who won three of his four European Golden Boots while playing for Real Madrid.
“Everyone knows that Cristiano is the benchmark in Madrid, number one,” Mbappé said.
He added, “I’ve been here for a year and a half, and he was here for nine years. I can’t compare myself to what he did; my path is different. Being mentioned alongside Cristiano is already an honour. But I’m only focused on forging my own path, helping the team, and winning every title possible.”
Mbappé emphasised that while personal accolades like the Golden Boot are gratifying, his main goal remains team success.
“Every kid who starts playing football dreams of scoring goals. In the end, this award makes me very happy, but team achievements are the most important.
“If we win the league and I win another Golden Boot, I’ll be even happier than I am now,” he added.
The 26-year-old has made a blistering start to the new campaign under manager Xabi Alonso, scoring 13 goals in just 11 La Liga matches, putting him on course for back-to-back Golden Boots.
