Marseille vs Atalanta preview, prediction, team news, and head-to-head

Both teams will be looking for their second win each in the group phase of the UCL this season. The French team have won one match and lost the other two, while Atalanta have won one match, lost one, and drawn their last UCL game.

Marseille comes into this game after a hard fought 1-0 victory against Auxerre away from home. Prior to this win, Roberto De Zerbi’s side was winless in three consecutive games. They also fell short at the continental stage when they lost 2-1 to Portuguese rivals Sporting Lisbon.

In addition to their last win, playing at home will give the team an extra boost to improve their standing on the table. The head coach will also hope that his men don’t get at the wrong side of the referee as their last match had one of his players get a red card.

A weekend 1-0 defeat against Udinese in the weekend saw the unbeaten run in the league come to an end for Atalanta. However, the Nerazzurri have had a lot of draw games this season to see them stay at the 10th position on the Serie A table.

After the last goalless draw with Slavia Prague and being unable to score at the weekend, Ivan Juric will task Nigerian striker Ademola Lookman to be more lethal in front of goal, especially as he has scored his first goal of the season.

Both teams have met only twice at the 2023/24 Europa League semi-finals where Atalanta emerged triumphant after two legs. The first leg ended in a 1-1 draw in France before the Italian side won the second leg 3-1 at home. 

Thanks to Ademola Lookman’s hattick, the Nerazzurri will go ahead to win the  Europa League that season against a very formidable Leverkusen side.

Roberto De Zerbi will make some changes in the players that will face their Italian opposition. Marseille's manager will rely on the experience of striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang to lead his attack.

However, the French side have a few injury concerns that the coach will deal with. Players like Hamed Traore, Geoffrey Kondogbia, and Leonardo Balerdi will not be part of this match. 

Juric will be happy that his long list of absentees are reducing as both Marten de Roon and  Daniel Maldini are back to the squad. At the moment, only Sead Kolasinac and Giorgio Scalvini are major doubts for this clash.
