Man United told to consider 38-year-old PL legend, two other free agents as Osimhen alternatives
Manchester United's search for a new striker to potentially replace the misfiring Rasmus Hojlund remains in full swing despite recent setbacks.
With top target Victor Osimhen edging closer to a Galatasaray switch, the Red Devils have been offered a trio of seasoned Premier League strikers as fallback options.
Underwhelming Hojlund on the brink of exit
Rasmus Hojlund’s first two seasons at Old Trafford have fallen well short of expectations. The Danish forward, signed for £64 million from Atalanta, could only muster 10 goals in 52 appearances during the 2024/25 campaign, raising doubts about his long-term viability at the club.
Now, the Red Devils are exploring ways to move him on, with Inter Milan emerging as a potential buyer. Hojlund himself is reluctant to leave, reportedly eager to fight for his place in Manchester.
Still, Manchester United are already preparing for life beyond him. While a £62.5 million deal for Wolves’ Matheus Cunha has already been sealed, and a move for Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo is nearing completion, there could still be room for one more forward.
Victor Osimhen had been earmarked as the marquee striker signing, but his decision to join Galatasaray, where he scored 37 goals during a stunning loan spell, has forced United to consider more unconventional alternatives.
Premier League proven strikers headline backup striker shortlist
With Osimhen no longer a viable target, Manchester United have been presented with three emergency striker options, each experienced and available for free.
Jamie Vardy, now 38, remains a household name and Premier League cult hero, though a move to United would be a wildcard gamble.
Callum Wilson, 33, recently parted ways with Newcastle and is attracting interest from newly promoted Leeds, while Dominic Calvert-Lewin is also available after leaving Everton but has reportedly already priced himself out of United's consideration due to steep wage demands.
Together, the trio bring 290 Premier League goals and over 800 appearances, an immense well of top-flight experience. But they are all seen as fallback options, to be pursued only if priority targets become unavailable later in the transfer window.
