Former Mamelodi Sundowns star Benson Mhlongo has cautioned against making any drastic coaching changes at the club, labelling such a move ‘suicidal’ at this critical stage of the season.

His comments come after a segment of the Mamelodi Sundowns fanbase called for the dismissal of head coach Miguel Cardoso following a 2-2 draw with Sudanese club Al Hilal in the CAF Champions League. Some supporters have even advocated for the return of former manager Pitso Mosimane.

However, Mhlongo believes that firing the current technical team would be a grave error. In an interview with Soccer Laduma, the former midfielder suggested that fans have become accustomed to dominating the league and are overreacting.

Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Advises Against Appointing New Coach

"Changing coaches at this point in time could be suicidal," Mhlongo stated. "A new coach will change a lot of things. I think they are not doing that bad. The supporters are spoiled from past seasons. They forget that other teams are catching up."

The former Bafana Bafana international also pointed out that the tightening title race is a sign of increased competition from rivals, not a failure on Mamelodi Sundowns' part.

"We can't say Sundowns have changed. Teams are now catching up Orlando Pirates is now winning its own games. Kaizer Chiefs are also winning games. I think the other big teams have stepped up," he explained.

"So it's not about Sundowns not creating a gap, but that the other teams, especially the big ones, are catching up. Supporters expect a huge gap, which is disrespectful to the other teams."

Despite the recent pressure, Mamelodi Sundowns remain at the top of the league table with 29 points from 14 matches.

They are level on points with second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand, while Kaizer Chiefs sit in third with 27 points.
