Mamelodi Sundowns legend Harris Choeu has voiced his opinion on the ideal candidate to lead the club, suggesting a different tactician should have been chosen over the current head coach, Miguel Cardoso.

Choeu expressed doubts about Cardoso's role in the club's recent acquisitions of Monnapule Saleng and Khulumani Ndamane.

His comments come as Mamelodi Sundowns have slipped from the top of the Betway Premiership table, now trailing Orlando Pirates near the season's midpoint.

"I know how [Patrice] Motsepe operates; he probably wants to give Cardoso a chance until the end of the season," Choeu, nicknamed ‘TV4’, told KickOff.

Mamelodi Sundowns Legend Recommends Best Coach to Replace Miguel Cardoso

The club icon speculated that former coach Pitso Mosimane, who has been linked with a return, might be influencing player recruitment from behind the scenes.

"At the moment, it could be Cardoso signing the players, or it could be Pitso behind the scenes," Choeu explained.

"Pitso did it before when he joined Sundowns from SuperSport United. He began recommending players to Sundowns while still at SuperSport. He even mentioned who he wanted and who he didn't want as part of his technical team."

Choeu questioned the current coach's familiarity with the new signings, stating, "Where does our coach, Cardoso, know Saleng from? He has never seen Saleng in his prime. So, this can't be a Cardoso signing."

Instead, Choeu championed another coach for the role: "The best coach for Sundowns could have been Rulani [Mokwena]. His only problem is that he is an intellectual. Rulani has got something in his mind that needs to be given a chance and put into practice."

He was critical of the current coaching setup, describing their approach as limited. "The minds of Cardoso and Steve [Komphela] are average. 'You cannot think beyond here.' Even during matches, they don't know what to do to change the game. They rely on individual brilliance to win matches."

"So, I prefer Rulani," Choeu continued. "His mind is at the same level as Pep Guardiola's. This boy would spend three hours speaking to Pep, and it would help him a lot. It was not easy to beat us under Rulani."

He also touched upon a broader issue within local coaching circles, remarking, "The problem with local coaches is that we sign players because their agents promise us this much. That's the only disadvantage with us."

Meanwhile, the Tshwane giants, led by Miguel Cardoso, have been in camp preparing for the season's restart. Their next fixture is against Orbit College FC at Loftus Versfeld on Monday.
