Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher said that England were not among the top three favourites for the World Cup, grouping the Three Lions with Portugal as countries with an outside chance.
Carragher, who had 38 caps for England during his playing career and represented his country at the 2006 World Cup, believes that Thomas Tuchel’s squad have a worse chance of winning next year's tournament than three other countries, at least.
What Carragher said
Carragher, during a recent appearance on CBS Sports, said that defending champions Argentina, alongside consecutive finalists France and European champions Spain, were the favourites.
“You have to look at Argentina, the holders. Will it be the last time we see Messi play football? They’ll probably have great support, especially if they play in Miami, with his impact on MLS and playing for Inter Miami,” Carragher said, per the Independent.
“From the European side of things, the European champions, Spain with Lamine Yamal and then France with Kylian Mbappe, arguably the two best players in the world right now, alongside obviously Ousmane Dembele with France as well.
“I find it very difficult to ever look at a tournament and not have France at the back of my mind. [England are in] the next level of teams, alongside Portugal; those teams I’ve mentioned are probably the favourites and then they’ve got an outside chance.”
Meanwhile, England boss Thomas Tuchel shared a similar sentiment as Carragher, admitting that they will enter the tournament as underdogs, given their lack of success since the 60s.
