Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard flirting with unemployment again
These are not the best of times for former Liverpool skipper Steven Gerrard and his Al-Ettifaq club in the ever-improving Saudi Pro League.
Gerrard’s future at the club is looking uncertain after a run of poor results that have left Al-Ettifaq winless since October.
Gerrard’s uncertain future
The Liverpool legend endured another poor outing after dropping further points in the Saudi Pro League.
Al-Ettihad were forced to share the spoils with Al Hazem following a dull 1-1 draw in their final game of the year.
Former Leicester City star Demarai Gray opened the scoring assisted by Georginio Wijnaldum but a late penalty from Toze denied what would have been a first since Oct 28, 2023.
The draw was the latest setback for the former Rangers and Aston Villa, leaving his Al-Ettihad seven points from the relegation zone.
The winless streak means that Gerrard’s job could be at risk as the Liverpool legend is walking on a tightrope.
He has come out to take responsibility for the more run but wants the management to back him with more signings.
“I am the first to hold responsibility and I will not blame anyone,” Gerrard stated after the draw against Al Hazem, per posts from the club's official social media account.
“I know our financial capacity well and we have the opportunity to make signings that will improve the team,” he added.
Gerrard and Al-Ettifaq have time to fix their issues after the Pro League embarked on a long winter break.
Al-Ettifaq will return to the pitch on February 15, 2024 against Al Khaleej.
