‘Last 16 is our last bus stop’ - Nigerian's lament Okoye's absence from AFCON squad, with Nwabali, Obasogie not impressive
The Super Eagles of Nigeria stumbled to a 2-1 defeat on Tuesday night against Egypt in preparation for the 2023 AFCON tournament in Morocco.
Egypt took the lead with a goal from Mahmoud Saber, but Chidozie Awaziem equalised for Nigeria before halftime.
Mostafa's subsequent goal secured the win for Egypt, meaning Eric Chelle's team suffered back-to-back losses ahead of their AFCON opener against Tanzania.
Fans not pleased with goalkeepers
Following the loss to Egypt, fans have called out the Nigerian goalkeeper Amas Obasogie after conceding the winning goal for the Pharaohs.
Obasogie was brought in as a substitute in the second half, replacing Stanley Nwabali after he also conceded the first goal.
However, he was unable to keep the Egyptians from scoring and failed to save the ball that led to the winner for the Pharaohs.
Nigerians have taken to social media to vent their frustrations about the goalkeeper picked for the AFCON competition, claiming they are not as good as Maduka Okoye who was dropped from the team.
One fan said, “See keeper, but this season MADUKA Okoye is ahead of both of them. Last 16 is our last bus stop.”

These reactions came following the omission of Okoye from the AFCON squad after making the first list.
The Udinese goalkeeper, who recently returned to his team, has been in good form and one of the best players for the Italian side.
