Barcelona's Yamal surpasses Messi, Aguero to set new Champions League record

Lamine Yamal has added another extraordinary record to his rapidly growing collection after becoming the youngest player to score a direct free-kick in the Champions League for a LaLiga club.

The Barcelona winger achieved the feat during his side's 5-1 victory over Feyenoord on Wednesday night, moving ahead of the likes of Sergio Agüero, Arda Güler and Lionel Messi.

Yamal found the net from a free-kick in the 76th minute to cap another outstanding Champions League performance.

At 19 years and 58 days, the Spain international became the youngest player to score a direct free-kick in the competition while representing a LaLiga club.

The previous record belonged to Real Madrid's Arda Güler, who achieved the feat at 21 years and 49 days. Agüero, now third on the list, was 21 years and 154 days when he scored his first Champions League free-kick.

Even Messi was older. The Barcelona legend was 22 years and 168 days old when he scored his first Champions League free-kick on December 9, 2009.

Remarkably, Messi had already won his first Ballon d'Or just one week earlier, becoming the second-youngest player in history to claim the prestigious award at the time.

Yamal's latest achievement therefore provides another fascinating comparison with his legendary former Barcelona teammate.

The Feyenoord game was not Yamal's only record-breaking moment.

Earlier in the match, the teenager provided an assist for Raphinha in the third minute, taking his Champions League goal contributions as a teenager to 21 and surpassing the mark previously established by Kylian Mbappé during his teenage years with Monaco and Paris Saint-Germain.

Yamal then added another assist for Gabriel Jesus in the 84th minute. His performance took his overall Champions League tally to 23 goal contributions, consisting of 12 goals and 11 assists.

Now, with a second consecutive Ballon d'Or nomination, another piece of history is potentially within reach. Yamal has the opportunity to become the youngest player ever to win the award, potentially surpassing the record associated with Messi.

At just 19, the Barcelona star is already breaking records held by some of football's greatest players. And judging by his latest Champions League display, the comparisons are unlikely to stop anytime soon.
