I will not beg anybody — Yamal rejects Mbappe's Ballon d'Or approach

Barcelona winger Lamine Yamal has refused to campaign for the 2026 Ballon d'Or, stating he does not need to beg for individual recognition.

​The 19-year-old addressed his candidacy on Tuesday, September 8, drawing a contrast to recent media statements from Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé.

​Yamal is a candidate in an unpredictable Ballon d'Or race lacking a consensus frontrunner.

​When asked about his prospects, the Spanish international insisted his collective achievements over the past year speak for themselves.

​“I don't think I need to campaign for the Ballon d'Or," Yamal stated. "Everyone has the right to think what they want. 

“I'm not going to beg anyone! I'm proud of the season I had with my team and with the national team.

“We were crowned world champions and won the league again. I think I had an excellent season among all those players and worked really hard.”

​The comments arrive one day after Mbappé launched a public campaign for the accolade.

​The Real Madrid forward claimed his individual numbers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup justified his selection. Mbappé scored 10 goals during the tournament to secure his second consecutive Golden Boot and become the all-time leading scorer in World Cup history with 22 goals, despite finishing the 2025/26 club campaign without a trophy.

​Conversely, Yamal anchors his candidacy on collective silverware. The winger helped Barcelona secure the 2025/26 LALIGA title before contributing to Spain's 2026 World Cup triumph in North America.

​Yamal has maintained his form into the 2026/27 campaign, scoring twice during Barcelona's 5-0 away victory over Valencia on September 6.
