What Mbappe said
The France national team captain received the European Golden Shoe for scoring 44 goals last season; his first. Ronaldo won the award four times, most of which came as a Real Madrid player.
Given Ronaldo's legacy at Real Madrid and Mbappe's emerging status as a Los Blancos great, both players have been compared, but the Frenchman plays it down.
“Everyone knows that Cristiano is the reference in Madrid, the number one. I’ve been here for a year and a half, and he was here for nine years,” he said, per Football Espana.
“I can’t compare myself to what he did; my path is different. I want to make my way, but being mentioned next to Cristiano is already a source of pride, but I only think about making my way, helping the team and winning as many titles as possible.”
Mbappé and Ronaldo
Kylian Mbappé has long vaunted Cristiano Ronaldo as his idol and admitted Ronaldo was a childhood role model.
Ronaldo’s Real Madrid legacy is concrete: he scored 450 goals in 438 appearances for Los Blancos and rewrote the club’s scoring records during his nine seasons at the Bernabéu.
Mbappé arrived at Real Madrid in 2024 already established as PSG’s modern icon, and he immediately began building his own Madrid chapter, winning the 2024–25 European Golden Boot after a 31-goal LaLiga season and finishing with a prolific overall return.
This form has continued into the current campaign, having already reached double digits in league goals this season. Mbappé is the early favourite for the Ballon d'Or, one of the few achievements he has yet to attain. Winning France Football's award this year would only cement his legacy further.
