With their sights set on making a statement at the Vancouver 7s, Kenya 7s head coach Kevin ‘Bling’ Wambua has opted to blend experienced campaigners with emerging talent.

Wambua has handed debuts to Kabras Sugar duo of Jone Kubu and Jackson Siketi, signaling a fresh injection of skill and energy into the team.

Kubu, a standout performer for Kabras RFC, has been instrumental in the club’s historic milestones.

The Fijian-born playmaker guided the Sugarmen to their maiden Kenya Cup triumph in 2016 and played a pivotal role in their subsequent league conquests, including the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons.

His impact extends to the Enterprise Cup, where he was instrumental in Kabras securing their first title in 2019, a feat they have since replicated.

Having arrived in Kenya in 2015 as part of the Samurai team for the Safari Sevens, Kubu was among a contingent of Fijian players signed by Kenya Cup side Kabras Sugar.

Unlike his compatriots, who moved on after a year, Kubu embraced Kenya as his new home. His perseverance and commitment earned him a call-up to the Kenya Simbas under former head coach Paul Odera, following World Rugby’s revised eligibility rules.

While he has primarily excelled in the 15s game, his inclusion in the sevens setup hints at an exciting new chapter in his career.

Jackson Siketi’s selection is equally merited, having consistently delivered impressive performances for Kabras Sugar.

His form has not gone unnoticed, and he now has a golden opportunity to prove himself on the international sevens stage.

Wambua has opted to retain the core of the squad from the Perth 7s, keeping 10 players, including seasoned campaigners Tony Omondi and Vincent Onyala. Additionally, William Mwanji makes his long-awaited return, further bolstering the team.

Currently placed ninth with 14 points after three tournaments, Shujaa will be aiming to break into the top eight by the end of the Vancouver 7s.
