As the CECAFA zone is allocated three slots for the continental tournament, the semi-final losers must win the subsequent playoff match to secure the final qualification spot for the 2026 U-17 Africa Cup of Nations. The third-place playoff is currently scheduled for December 2.

Following a fiercely contested group stage, regional giants Kenya and Tanzania set up a strong semi-final clash. For the two youth titans, the match is far more than a battle for bragging rights as it is a winner-takes-all contest where only two spots are guaranteed for the 2025 AFCON U-17 finals.

Junior Stars, who secured their knockout passage despite a final group-stage loss to hosts Ethiopia, had the task of overcoming a Tanzanian side that entered the semi-finals as the tournament's most dominant team, boasting a 100%-win record in Group B.

Kenya vs Tanzania: First Half Action

The first 10 minutes of the match were relatively calm, with both Junior Stars and Tanzania sharing control and testing each other without creating clear-cut chances.

Just before the 11th minute, Razel Omondi of Junior Stars had a golden opportunity from a penalty, awarded after Tanzania’s goalkeeper committed a foul inside the box.

However, the keeper produced a crucial save, denying Razel Omondi and keeping the scoreline at 0-0. Tanzania then took control of the match, defending intelligently and carefully managing possession to execute their game plan effectively.

In the 19th minute, Tanzania were awarded a free kick, and from the resulting set-piece, they executed it perfectly to score a well-taken goal.

Junior Stars missed several crucial opportunities, while their Tanzanian opponents looked confident, showcasing brilliant passing and a rock-solid defence.

Kenya earned a corner but failed to capitalise, with Tanzania’s organised defence blocking every attempt. Maintaining their momentum, the Tanzanians added a second goal in the 29th minute.

In the 33rd minute, Tanzania came close to adding another goal, but the ball narrowly missed, skimming just outside the post.

Tanzania continued to dismantle Junior Stars’ defence with their calculated and disciplined style of play until the first half ended.

Kenya vs Tanzania: Second Half Action

The second half also proved intense, as Junior Stars were looking forward to making up for their mistakes in the first half and, hopefully, turning things around and qualifying for the final.

Just five minutes into the second half, Tanzania earned a corner, but they failed to convert it, leaving the score at 2-0. In the 53rd minute, Tanzania were on the brink of adding another goal, but the Kenyan goalkeeper was on alert. However, his save resulted in a corner, which was crucially saved.

Junior Stars coach William Muluya then made two changes in the 57th minute, with Brighton Nacheri going back to the bench and Nevil Wafula going in, hoping for a change on the scoresheet.

Junior Stars created several chances in an effort to level the scores, but Tanzania’s solid defending and their sharp counter-attacks kept Kenya's backline under constant pressure.

Tanzania then made substitutions, looking to pile more misery on Junior Stars, who were now struggling to make an impact in the hotly contested match.

Junior Stars then put in the work, and in the 83rd minute, they found the back of the net courtesy of Armstrong Omondi, keeping the hopes of equalising or even winning the match.

However, Tanzania sealed the match with a victory in added time, adding the third goal to secure a slot in the final and send Junior Stars to the playoff.
