The former Kenya international, who played in the Premier League for Tottenham Hotspur and Southampton, is the latest to confer this title on the 1994 AFCON winner, underscoring the impact he had on fans and footballers on the continent and around the globe.

What Wanyama said

Wanyama is the protagonist of a clip making the rounds on social media, in which he was asked some quick-fire questions on his football-related preferences.

The 34-year-old showed his diverse taste in the first three questions, picking Ronaldo (R9), Andrea Iniesta and Sergio Ramos respectively, when asked to name his best attacker, playmaker and defender.

He gave Cristiano Ronaldo the title of the player with the most "aura" and mentioned the current Ballon d'Or holder, Ousmane Dembele, as the best active footballer.

Interestingly, he picked a defender, Tottenham's Cristian Romero, as the best player in the Premier League, despite their time in North London not overlapping.

The next question was the best African player of all time, and he answered assuredly, "that has to be Jay Jay Okocha." He named Sadio Mane as the best current African footballer.
