I’ve to try my best - Liam Delap on competing with top-quality players in Chelsea
Liam Delap is preparing for his first full campaign as a new striker for Chelsea, a journey that began just two weeks after his arrival with an unforgettable trip to the USA for the Club World Cup.
The tournament proved to be an important bonding experience for the 22-year-old and his new teammates, culminating in a historic victory.
Delap made a strong impression from the start, assisting a goal on his debut against Los Angeles FC and finding his first goal in a match against ES Tunis.
He played a key role in the team's run, featuring in the knockout rounds and the final as they were crowned world champions.
What Delap said
Delap insists it "won’t get in our way" as the team prepares for its opening league match against Crystal Palace. He acknowledges that their new status as world champions also brings added pressure.
"It’s a special feeling, but it’s probably a new pressure we have to deal with," Delap said.
He added, "People are going to be fighting hard against us, but we have got the mindset that we’re ready to compete and show what a good team we are.”
Delap has already provided a glimpse of his potential to supporters, scoring twice against AC Milan in the pre-season friendly at home.
His goals, along with impressive performances from fellow summer acquisitions Estevao, Joao Pedro, and Jamie Gittens, have injected new energy into the squad.
The striker was full of praise for the new arrivals, noting their quality. "They are really high-quality players and I’m sure they are going to bring a lot of joy and good football to the team," he commented.
He also emphasised the importance of squad depth and healthy competition.
"The quality of the team is incredible, and we've got some talented players. There's the competitive side you need in big teams to compete for trophies; it’s so important to have that depth," he added.
Delap is focused on both personal and collective success. He is eager to prove himself and contribute to the team's pursuit of silverware, stating, "I’ve got to try my best, they’ve got to try their best, and hopefully we can do it together.”
He will be available for selection when Chelsea face Crystal Palace on Sunday.
