In the announcement video, Mourinho made a cheeky comment that can be objectively viewed as a dig at certain clubs.

“Finals I've won them, leagues. I've conquered them. I have never been on of the bottle, I make the bottle.”

“I prefer not to speak. My achievement, my success, my work—they speak for themselves. This is the Special One, now yours to share.”

What is “the bottle”?

Ordinarily, a bottle is a glass or plastic container used to hold and store liquid. However, in football, to bottle means something tangentially different; it means to fail to claim success while having gained a significant advantage.

According to The Guardian, the phrase "bottle it" originates from Cockney rhyming slang, where "bottle" means "arse" (bottle and glass). Initially implying a loss of bowel control due to fear, it now means to fail or lack courage in a crucial moment.

While many clubs have had instances where they bottled a lead or a title, some clubs have made a habit of it and have thus had the term as a regular descriptor.
