Super Eagles technical director Austin Eguavoen has shown full support for the new Nigeria national team head coach Eric Chelle.
Following the resignation of Finidi George last year, the Nigerian Football Federation, following an unsuccessful search for a replacement, appointed Eguavoen on an interim basis.
The 63-year-old guided Nigeria through a successful AFCON qualification and will now retreat to his role as technical director, following the appointment of the French-Malian.
What Eguavoen said
Speaking to reporters after Chelle's appointment, the former Super Eagles defender rallied for support for the ex-MC Oran coach.
The Super Eagles find themselves in a precarious position in their bid to qualify for the 2026 World Cup, as they currently lie 5th in a group of six. Chelle's main objective is believed to be ensuring Nigeria's participation in USA/Mexico/Canada, and Eguavoen urges everyone to keep their eye on the ball.
“It’s a hot seat, but we should do everything we can to make it as cool as possible,” Eguavoen said, per Brila. “It’s not about me or Eric; it’s about Nigeria and flying our flag at the World Cup in 2026.”
Chelle's first test as Super Eagles boss comes in March when Nigeria will play Zimbabwe and Rwanda on the 17th and 21st of that month.
