‘It’s going to be automatic’ - Ex-NFF president states condition for Amuneke’s Super Eagles return
Pinnick emphasised that while Amuneke's credentials as a player and coach are respected, his reputation alone is not enough to secure one of the most demanding coaching roles in African football.
The former NFF boss believes that tangible, recent success with a club is a prerequisite for managing the three-time African champions.
Currently, Amuneke is managing Heartland FC, a team competing in Nigeria's second division following their relegation.
Pinnick's stance on Amuneke
Pinnick has laid out a challenging roadmap for the former winger, suggesting he must lead Heartland back to the top flight, contend for the league title, and even aim for CAF Champions League glory—a feat no Nigerian club has achieved in two decades.
Speaking on the Sunday Oliseh Global Football Insights Podcast, Pinnick clarified his position on Amuneke's prospects.
"I like him. We have a good relationship, but we also believe that some local clubs need the attention of ex-internationals," Pinnick said.
"I believe he’s at one of the local clubs. I don’t know how well he’s faring there.""To me, he’s an excellent coach. I don’t have anything against him.
“He’s helping the local club. Let him concentrate there and take the club high. We need Nigerian clubs to win the CAF Champions League again. He’s at Heartland, a big club... he can help the club win the Champions League. He’s still very young."
Pinnick concluded by making the link between club success and the national team explicit.
"Once that is done, it’s going to be automatic going to the Super Eagles. He’s a good coach, but trust me, it goes beyond that. The Super Eagles is not just for anybody to handle. Let’s see your results with Heartland FC."
Meanwhile, former Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick has boldly claimed that the Super Eagles would not have missed out on the 2026 FIFA World Cup under his leadership.
