It was too much — Liverpool star explains why they are struggling this season
Liverpool midfielder Alexis MacAllister has attempted to diagnose their struggles this season, admitting that they had no chance of defending their league title.
The Argentina international was a standout performer in the Reds' Premier League-winning campaign last season. However, his performance, as well as the rest of the squad's, has dipped this season, as they find themselves 15 points adrift of league leaders Arsenal halfway through the season.
What MacAllister said
In a bid to consolidate their success from last season, Liverpool had a record-setting transfer window: a £449 million spend, including performance-related add-ons.
The outlay has not directly resulted in on-pitch success, as they have already suffered six losses this season, two more than they endured in the entirety of last season.
MacAllister blames the large-scale changes to the squad, which included the unfortunate demise of Diogo Jota and the transfer exits of Darwin Nunez, Alexander Arnold and Luis Diaz, and the arrivals of Florian Wirtz, Alexander Isak, Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, and Hugo Ekitike.
"Many things changed, as I said; new players came in to replace those who left. We changed too many things, but I prefer to keep it to myself," he admitted, per Goal.
"There are not many chances of Liverpool retaining the title. I hate to say it, but it is quite clear. Arsenal is in a really good moment, Manchester City is quite close, but we are not close in terms of performances or results, so I do not see us becoming champions again.
"It hurts because this should be a moment when we are enjoying the Premier League, which we won, and we should be in a much better place than we are."
