The former middleweight champion of the UFC, Israel Adesanya, landed in Nigeria on Wednesday.

The 35-year-old mixed martial artist's entry into the nation was revealed in a post on the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission's X account.

When the Nigerian-New Zealander and his parents arrived back in Lagos, they were greeted with music and drums at the airport.

Only a few days after losing his UFC middleweight title match on Sunday to South Africa's Dricus du Plessis, Adesanya returned to Nigeria.

In the fourth round of the battle, Du Plessis locked his neck in a rear-naked choke, and he forfeited the opportunity to reclaim the title by tapping out in submission.

Adesanya has since admitted the mistake he made in the fourth round through a breakdown of his official Freestylebender YouTube account.

After losing against Du Plessis in September 2023, Adesanya suffered back-to-back losses and surrendered the title to Sean Strickland.

Although his family moved to New Zealand not long after he was born in Lagos, he was raised there.

The two-time UFC champion would make his second trip to Nigeria in five years when he returned there in 2019.
