'I’m enjoying it' - Rooney gives simple answer when asked when he'd return to coaching
Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney has revealed his immediate plans for the future, confirming he intends to focus on television punditry for the time being following his appearance in Sunday's Soccer Aid charity match.
Rooney, showcasing flashes of his vintage form, delighted the crowd by scoring just four minutes into the game for England against a World XI.
Despite his individual effort, his side ultimately fell to a 5-4 defeat. Nevertheless, the event was a resounding success, raising an impressive £15 million for charity.
Following the charity clash, questions turned to Rooney's professional future. Having been sacked as manager of Plymouth at the end of last year, the former striker has been linked with various coaching roles.
What Rooney said
However, Rooney indicated that his current enjoyment of media work is guiding his next steps.
"Obviously just doing some TV work at the minute, so that’s what I’m doing. I’m enjoying it. So, that’s where I’ll be," Rooney told talkSPORT.
The former England captain also reflected on the Soccer Aid match itself, emphasising the primary objective of the event.
He added, "We knew it was always going to be a tough game. They had some really good players in the team. But I thought it was a good game for everyone who came to watch. Unfortunately, we didn’t win, obviously that was the fun but the main reason we’re all here today is to try and raise money."
Rooney decision for now puts a hold on a return to the dugout, following managerial stints at Derby County, Birmingham City, D.C. United, and Plymouth Argyle.
