I’ll talk about it at the end of my career - De Gea on failed Real Madrid move
Former Manchester United goalkeeper David De Gea has finally offered a rare glimpse into his perspective on the dramatic collapse of his move to Real Madrid in 2015.
The deadline-day fiasco in 2015 saw De Gea on the brink of a move to the Spanish giants from Manchester United, with a deal seemingly all but done.
However, a last-minute failure to submit the necessary paperwork, famously attributed by many to a broken fax machine saw the transfer fall through, leaving De Gea to remain at Old Trafford despite his contract having only a year left.
What De Gea said
In an interview with Italian publication Cronache Di Spogliatoio, De Gea was pressed on the fateful day.
His response, while still guarded, suggests there's much more to the narrative than what has emerged over the years.
He said, "At the end of my career, I'll talk about what happened that day. When certain things happen, it’s for a reason. I stayed in Manchester and I was happy.
“Courtois went there, having found a place at Atlético thanks to my departure. He did very well, and I’m happy for him.”
De Gea's reference to Thibaut Courtois, who eventually joined Real Madrid and has enjoyed immense success.
The failed transfer has undoubtedly been one of modern football's most compelling "what ifs.”
