‘I try to train hard’ - Super Eagles star Onyeka claims he is happy with his game time
This season, the Super Eagles star has featured in just nine matches for Brentford, contributing only two assists.
Only six of those appearances have been in the Premier League, where the club currently sits eighth with 26 points from 18 games.
Onyeka, who has had limited opportunities with Brentford this season, was instrumental in Nigeria's midfield as they advanced in the tournament.
Onyeka on game time at Brentford
When asked how he maintains his form despite the lack of consistent minutes, Onyeka credited his dedication in training and his mental preparedness.
His comments came after a standout performance for Nigeria in their thrilling 3-2 victory over Tunisia at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, a win that secured the Super Eagles' place in the Round of 16 with a match to spare.
"I try to train hard because I know opportunities like this will come any time," Onyeka said. "I’m just happy that I’m getting game time here, which is good. I’m always fit whenever I’m called upon to play."
Pressed on whether he felt he had something to prove, the midfielder was candid in his response.
"Every player has a point to prove if they’re not playing in that team," he stated. "But right now, I’m just trying to help my team and hopefully we can get into the next round and go far in the AFCON."
