“I loved watching him” — Michelle Alozie names controversial Italian striker as childhood inspiration
Michelle Alozie has never been afraid to stand out, and she credits one of football’s most polarizing figures for teaching her how.
In her latest interview with Deeds Magazine, the stylish Super Falcons defender revealed that Italian striker Mario Balotelli was her biggest childhood inspiration, not just for his skill, but for his refusal to dim his personality.
How Balotelli inspired Michelle Alozie
The Chicago Stars winger detailed how she was inspired by one of the most talented yet polarizing figures in modern.
“Through it all, Mario is loudly and proudly himself, and that is what really stuck out for me at a young age,” Alozie said.
“I grew up playing as a 9, loved watching him play, and tried to integrate his style into mine.”
That influence shows both on and off the pitch for the Super Falcons star.
Alozie is now widely regarded as the most stylish player in the Super Falcons squad, famous for fearlessly mixing high fashion with streetwear.
“I use fashion as a form of self-expression,” she explained.
“I love having fun, mixing up my style, and seeing what I feel most comfortable and confident in that day, and it is ever-changing.”
The 27-year-old’s journey from California youth fields to the FIFA Women’s World Cup was anything but conventional.
Undrafted in 2019, she emailed teams begging for tryouts and crashed on her sister’s couch while chasing her dream. Yet she never doubted her path. “Even if your plans do not turn out exactly as you expected, you should trust in your hard work and God’s timing,” she said.
"My Nigerian culture got me where I am today"
Alozie insists her Nigerian heritage gave her the resilience to keep going. “My Nigerian culture got me to where I am today,” she told Deeds Magazine.
“In my culture, God is central… your pride makes you resilient and helps you continue pursuing your passions even in the face of hardships; and your family keeps you grounded and hungry for more."
Now playing for Chicago Stars and proudly wearing the Super Falcons jersey, Alozie sees herself as a role model for Nigerian girls around the world.
